Philosophy Wire: Are the senses useful? Not!

Philosophy Wire by Spiros Kakos [2015-03-08]:

Is it good to see? Sure most people would say…

Is it good to be able to hear? No doubt about it, most people would say…

But think again!

It is said that Democritus pulled his own eyes out so as not to be fooled by his senses. And this could be true: how else could he “see” the atoms if he was seeing? What is most important in life, like love, is not sensed with the senses but with the heart. What is really scientific, like the notion of truth, of proof, the axioms, infinity et cetera, is not perceived with the senses but with the immaterial mind.

Close your eyes. And you will see more than you ever imagined…
